A long term health study for oil spill clean-up workers and volunteers

The GuLFSTUDY (Gulf Long-term Follow-up Study) Program is designed to study the health of individuals who helped with the oil spill response and clean-up, took training, signed up to work, or were sent to the Gulf to help in some way after the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is leading this research with the support of many local community groups. The study is funded by the Intramural Program of the NIEHS. The NIEHS is part of the National Institutes of Health. The NIEHS mission is to discover how the environment affects people in order to promote healthier lives.

The GuLFSTUDY remains committed to studying the health of individuals in the Gulf who have been impacted by oil spills. We are aware of the crude oil leak that took place in November 2023, roughly 20 miles offshore of the Mississippi River Delta. This most recent spill did originate closer to share than the Deepwater Horizon spill, but was less than 1% of the overall volume of the Deepwater Horizon spill. Please feel free to contact us at info@gulfstudy.nih.gov or 1-855-644-4853 if you have any question about our research or if you would like to share about your experience.
